Panel Discussion + Exhibition + Concert Performance AKC Gnezdo – 16.07.2023. ✨ 18:00 – Panel discussion and round table: Hate Speech and LGBTIQ+ Activism in Serbia ✨ 20:00 – Official opening of the exhibition ✨ 20:00+ – Immediately after the opening: concert performance
Following recent events, including a vandalistic act filled with hate—specifically the writing of discriminatory graffiti targeting the LGBTIQ+ community on the façade of AKC Gnezdo and surrounding buildings—as well as Gnezdo’s engagement in removing such content, there arose a need to encourage active community participation in public dialogue and to raise awareness about the living and working conditions of our fellow citizens who belong to this community. However, hate speech does not affect only members of the LGBTIQ+ community or any single group, but society as a whole.
It is well known that AKC Gnezdo invests significant effort and capacity together with its users to create a space where all citizens can freely express themselves and live as they wish, as who they are, in a safe environment free of hate and violence.
The curatorial concept of this event—developed in collaboration with Stereovizija, and artists Aleksander Zain and Miloš Janjić—approaches the exhibition as a spectrum of shared languages, different in form but united in narrative: the search for strength within community, within all of us, and a reflection on what kind of community we need, as well as how we can collectively develop solutions and encourage social engagement. The goal is to establish and examine good practices that ensure both free expression and safety within the space.
A special focus, due to recent events, is placed on creating a framework for discussion on hate speech and gently empowering the audience to develop personal practices in dealing with it in everyday life.
The group exhibition will present works by artists exploring themes that queer artists have been researching in their artistic processes over the past years.
Through the concert performance, artist Dražen Horvatić offers insight into his long-term artistic and activist work, inviting the audience to engage with the themes he has been critically exploring for years.
We warmly invite all members of the LGBTIQ+ community from Kruševac and the surrounding area, as well as all citizens for whom personal freedoms and human rights are an essential part of understanding today’s socio-political context, to join us at Gnezdo on July 15th from 18:00.
