The Self-Education University is visiting the Alternative Cultural Center Gnezdo in Kruševac, where we’ll be screening the documentary “Flow: For Love of Water” (2008). After the screening, we’ll have a discussion on water privatization, environmental activism, and the importance of protecting natural resources.
Water is the foundation of life—every living being on the planet depends on it. This film confronts us with the unsettling reality that our most basic resource is being put at risk, as the greed of multinational corporations threatens the livelihoods of billions and endangers our environment.
Any film that begins with a quote like “Thousands have lived without love, not one without water” doesn’t promise a cheerful experience. The truth is deeply concerning and shouldn’t be swept under the rug. It seems the planet is running out of water sources, which, given our dependence on it, is alarming. As one of the participants in the film says, “Wars are fought over oil, but the same could happen over water.” This documentary is important because it shows that it is still possible to resist the interests of powerful corporations—and that ordinary people, when organized, can protect what life on Earth depends on.
The film won the Best Documentary award at the Vail Film Festival and was nominated for the same award at the Sundance Film Festival.
