Real Men

REAL MEN is an educational theatre piece about gender, gender equality and gender-based violence.

The performance draws on feminist knowledge while telling the story from a male perspective. What is masculinity? What does it mean to be a “Real Man”? Who taught you how to be a man? How do boys grow up in Serbia today? And what is the relationship between masculinity and violence? These are just some of the questions explored in the performance.

Both humorous and deeply moving, post-dramatic and documentary in form, REAL MEN was developed through a six-month research process focused on the artistic exploration of gender, gender roles, stereotypes, and the ways in which gender stereotypes affect society.

Over the past eleven years, the production has been performed more than 170 times in 13 countries, 50 cities and 10 villages. It has received awards at festivals in Smederevo, Novi Pazar and Vrnjačka Banja, and in 2012 it was named one of the five theatrical events of the season by NIN’s theatre critics.
