Course of Subversive and Socially Engaged Film

The Course of Subversive and Socially Engaged Film aims to provide participants with both practical and theoretical knowledge about film as an art form and a tool for social change.

The program includes screenings and analysis of short films and excerpts, group discussions, and practical filming exercises. Throughout the course, participants will explore how film and video have historically been used for social mobilization, subversion, political organizing, and addressing socially relevant issues.

Topics include how film and media based on moving images shape social reality, how guerrilla filmmaking can bypass control by centers of power, and how examples from film history can help us critically interpret historical events. The course also examines how film and video can be used to actively reshape the world we live in.

Participants will engage with themes such as avant-garde cinema, the French New Wave, film as a tool of decolonization, activist film and media collectives, and socially engaged documentaries. The course also focuses on how affordable and accessible digital technologies can be used to create video content addressing issues within our communities.

The content and schedule of the course can be further adapted to participants’ interests.

The program is organized by the Samoobrazovni univerzitet Svetozar Marković and AKC Gnezdo, and led by Saša Perić—film and theatre director, activist, educator, and PhD student of culture and media at the Faculty of Political Sciences in Belgrade.
