Calyces is an Athens-based progressive rock/heavy metal band led by Manthos Stergiou, former member of Tardive Dyskinesia. Alongside him are Stavros Rigos, Giannis Golfis, and Loukas Giannakitsas. The band combines 2000s sludge/prog metal influences with elements of 1970s progressive rock, creating a dense and dynamic sound that bridges classic and modern heavy music.
Their debut album Impulse to Soar (2020), mastered by Grammy Award winner Alan Douches and featuring a saxophone solo by Jørgen Munkeby (Shining), received widespread international critical acclaim and media attention.
In 2023, the band announced the return of drummer Stavros Rigos (formerly of Poema), marking a reunion of long-time collaborators. Stavros and Manthos previously worked together in Tardive Dyskinesia, contributing to the albums Distorting Point of View (2006) and The Sea of See Through Skins (2008), where their musical chemistry was first established.
By 2024, Calyces completed recording their second studio album, scheduled for release in early 2025. The album Fleshy Waves of Probability marks a new era for the band — conceived as a cohesive whole rather than a collection of individual tracks, with a denser sound and unified atmosphere. It emphasizes organic instrumentation and a balance between complexity and directness, designed to resonate strongly in live performances.
