On Friday, September 1st, we are coming to the beautiful Gnezdo in Kruševac! Join us to watch films from special festival categories from the past 13 years, as well as our most interesting DIY (do-it-yourself) category films. There will be something for everyone, and visitors will vote for the best film, followed by a social gathering.
Since its first edition in 2010, MikroFAF has presented over 500 films from around the world and has grown from a local initiative into an international short film platform. The Road Edition of the festival will take place as a tour across Serbia, with the aim of decentralizing cultural programs, expanding audiences, and reflecting on the development of the short film scene over the past 14 years.
From the very beginning, MikroFAF has followed the needs of both the scene and the audience. It has gone through various transformations and new formats, establishing a unique position within the alternative film scene.
At this point, we find it important that the festival is not only held in Belgrade, but also in other local communities, especially those with less access to cultural and artistic content. We are also stepping outside conventional frameworks and returning to the practices of our early days, when films were screened in spaces not originally intended for cinema programs.
This approach also gives us the opportunity to strengthen collaborations with colleagues from Serbia’s independent scene and to reach a more diverse audience through screenings in public spaces—such as local parks, alternative gathering spots, squares, streets, and cultural centers. In this way, we encourage local communities not only to engage with artistic content, but also to participate in public discussions and in the jury process of competitive programs.
At all festival locations, visitors will vote for the best film in the selected categories, and the films with the highest audience votes will be screened in November in Belgrade, the festival’s home base, at the Museum of Yugoslav Film Archive.
During the selection of films for each program segment, the main criterion was to present films that, over the past 13 editions of the festival, received awards and recognition, or had a strong response from both professional audiences and the public.
The idea to re-screen these films comes from the need to collectively apply a “test of time” with the audience, as film production has rapidly evolved since 2010. Greater access to technology has made audiovisual creation more accessible, often influencing directing approaches and screenwriting. On the other hand, in times when filmmaking was significantly more expensive, limitations in camera quality, sound equipment, or post-production were often compensated for by inventive directing solutions or more original storytelling structures.
Beyond the stories they tell, these films also document the broader evolution of digitalization, technical innovation, and phenomena such as viral video trends—something MikroFAF has been spontaneously recording throughout all these years.
