As we watch the demolition of the Army House, built in 1930 for the needs of the Kruševac garrison, we cannot help but ask who allowed the gradual destruction of a building that represents significant cultural heritage of the city, and why—and how—the new cultural space will be managed. Will this space be open and free? Will the city respond in this way to the needs of artists, cultural workers, and artistic collectives, and ease the extremely difficult working conditions in the cultural sector by at least providing space for their work? Or is this yet another closed institution in which those whose needs institutions constantly refer to will have no voice? Culture is not a privilege, but a right. Culture is a public good. These photographs were taken only ten days ago and are part of research on abandoned spaces and their repurposing conducted by our volunteer from Argentina, interdisciplinary artist Julieta Reyes.
